London businesses to benefit from Mental Health First Aid training

 1st October 2019

London businesses are being encouraged to sign-up for Adult Mental Health First Aid training so their staff can identify, understand and help a person who may have a mental health issue.

Nearly half of adults in England believe they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, and around 15% of people in employment are struggling with at least one common mental health problem1.

Mental Health First Aid teaches people how to identify, understand and help a person who may have a mental health issue. In the same way we learn physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid teaches people how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill-health and take appropriate action.

The 2-day workshop on 16 and 17 October offers participants the confidence, knowledge and understanding of mental health problems so they can support and guide colleagues appropriately.

Delegates will explore how to:

  • Identify the early stages of a mental health problem
  • Help someone who is dealing with a mental health issue
  • Help stop mental ill health from worsening
  • Help someone have a quicker recovery
  • Guide someone towards appropriate professional help
  • Break the stigma of having a mental health problem

Alex Elmywood, Organisational Improvement Director at the Growth Company, commented:

“With so much media coverage on wellbeing, people are now more aware than ever of the impact mental ill-health can have on people and businesses. In the UK mental ill-health currently affects 1 in 4 people and costs businesses almost £35 billion each year in lost working days. Whilst many businesses have started to implement employee wellbeing programmes, mental health issues and stress-related illness continue to rise[2].

“For many years, businesses have had the resource in place to look after an employee if they are injured or taken ill at work. With Mental ill-health being the main cause of employee sickness in 2019, we need to ensure the same level of support is available in these situations too.”
